The Journey to Their Katla Proposal | Naya & Chris

Chris knew he wanted to propose to Naya somewhere that felt like an adventure.

Katla gave him something particularly useful for a surprise proposal: the moment wouldn't exist on its own.

There was a whole experience around it. They would leave Vík together, travel away from the Ring Road by Super Jeep, make their way into the glacier landscape and explore the ice with their guide.

Somewhere inside all of that, Chris would ask Naya to marry him.

And afterwards? The adventure would keep going.

Their Proposal Started in Vík

Chris and Naya began the experience from their hotel in Vík.

From there, they climbed into the specially equipped vehicle that would take them towards Katla. That's an important part of this particular proposal story because getting there wasn't simply dead time between the hotel and the place Chris wanted to propose.

The journey was part of what Naya thought they were doing that day. They were going to experience Katla together. She just didn't know everything Chris had planned.

Leaving the Ordinary Road Behind

Once you leave Vík and start travelling towards the glacier, the landscape changes. So does the pace of the experience.

There's no arriving at a car park, walking for two minutes and suddenly having to create a proposal moment. Chris had time to settle into the day. Naya had an actual adventure to enjoy.

The proposal becomes part of the experience rather than the only reason the day exists.

Arriving at the Ice

By the time Chris and Naya reached the ice, they had already travelled well beyond the Iceland most visitors experience from the road.

Their guide led them into the accessible area of the ice, eventually reaching a section framed by a natural arch.

This was where Chris's secret finally stopped being a secret. He got down on one knee, opened the ring box and asked Naya to marry him.

And Naya said yes.

After all the planning and travelling that had happened beforehand, the proposal itself took only a moment. That's usually how it goes.

A lot happens behind thirty seconds.

Then They Got to Actually Enjoy Katla

One of my favourite things about building the proposal into a larger experience is that saying yes doesn't mean the day suddenly ends.

Chris and Naya were already somewhere extraordinary. So they stayed.

They spent more time exploring the ice and the landscape around it, now without Chris having a ring and a secret plan sitting quietly in the back of his mind. They could walk, look around, take everything in and have the slightly surreal realisation that they had arrived at Katla as boyfriend and girlfriend and were leaving engaged.

The Super Jeep Ride Back Felt Different

Eventually, it was time to travel back towards Vík.

Same vehicle. Same route out. Very different passengers. But that's such a small part of what the couple actually experiences. There is the anticipation before it. The relief afterwards. The first time you look at the ring without somebody secretly watching the clock.

The journey back when there isn't anything left to organise.

Chris and Naya had already had the big moment.

Now they could just be engaged.

Why I Don't Treat the Journey as Something to Get Through

When I plan proposal experiences in Iceland, I'm not only thinking about where someone will kneel.

I'm thinking about what happens before that. If reaching the location involves travelling by Super Jeep, putting on glacier equipment and walking with a guide, those aren't inconveniences we need to hurry through so we can reach the photographs.

They're part of what the couple came to Iceland to experience.

That matters even more when one person doesn't know there's a proposal coming. Naya needed to have a perfectly good reason to be there even if Chris had never taken a ring out of his pocket. She did.

They were exploring Katla together. The proposal simply changed what the journey meant.

Considering Your Own Katla Proposal?

Chris and Naya's story shows what one real experience looked like.

It isn't a template for what yours will look like.

Katla changes. The accessible ice changes. Conditions change. Your guide determines where we can safely go, and I plan the proposal around the experience that actually exists when you're here.

If you're considering doing this yourself, my Iceland Ice Cave Proposal Experience explains the practical side, including private guided access, the Super Jeep experience, surprise planning, proposal positioning and what happens if Iceland changes the plan.
