We help choose the right location and timing, work out how to get your partner there without making them suspicious, keep an eye on Icelandic weather and road conditions, and have a backup plan ready if Iceland decides to change ours.

Why Having Someone Who Knows Iceland Matters.
A waterfall might look completely empty in a photograph. Arrive at the wrong time, and you could find yourself sharing that same spot with three tour buses.
And that's only one part of planning a proposal here.
Living in Vík means I get to see how these locations change throughout the seasons. I know which places are worth an early start, when access becomes complicated, and why a location that works beautifully in July might be completely wrong in February.
Sometimes that means choosing a quieter spot nearby. Sometimes it means changing the timing. And occasionally, it means letting go of the original location because the weather has other ideas.

Lisa, the isolated cliff, the glacial rivers below, and the black sand banks in the distance were the only witnesses to the question, “Will you marry me?”
Within a few hours, I couldn’t help but scream, “LISA!!!” in our rental car as my fiancée and I flipped through the preview shots she had already sent us. She had perfectly captured the proposal, the tears of joy, the laughter, the smiles, and everything in between. Not a moment was missed.

I'm the person behind McWhirter Elopements, based in Vík, South Iceland.
Over the years, I've spent a surprising amount of time hiding behind rocks, crouching beside waterfalls, and pretending not to know the very nervous person who keeps looking in my direction.
I've photographed proposals where everything went exactly to plan, and others where Iceland decided we needed a completely different one.
But one thing never gets old: seeing someone's face when they realise what's happening.
Before that moment, I'm the person you'll be messaging about locations, weather, secret signals, and whether your partner might be getting suspicious.
And when the day arrives, I'll be there with my camera, ready for the moment you've been planning. I'll make sure we have a clear plan for the photographs afterwards, too, so you can enjoy being newly engaged without wondering what to do next.

1. We Discover Your Vision
We'll start with a conversation about your relationship, your partner and what would make this moment feel like the two of you.
I'll ask the questions that help us work out what they'd love, what might make them suspicious, and where to begin.
2. We Design the Experience
I'll help you choose a location, plan the timing and work out how to get your partner there without giving away the surprise.
We'll also prepare a backup that you're genuinely happy with, because Iceland doesn't always cooperate with the original plan.
3. We Fine-Tune the Details
As the day approaches, I'll monitor the weather and conditions. We'll stay in touch through WhatsApp, make any necessary adjustments and go through exactly what you need to do.
No guessing where to stand or wondering whether I've arrived.
4. You Ask the Question
I'll be in position, camera ready, while you arrive with your partner.
You'll know where to go and when it's time. Then you can forget about the logistics and concentrate on asking that one very important question.
And yes, I'll be photographing the reactions, the happy tears and everything that happens in between.

Helicopter proposal experience
For the person who wants to make this a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Imagine telling your partner you've arranged a private helicopter flight over Iceland.
You'll fly above mountains, glaciers and volcanic landscapes, taking in views you couldn't experience from the road. As far as your partner knows, this is simply one of the highlights of your trip.
What they don't know is that we've planned something much bigger.
The helicopter lands at a remote location chosen around your experience and the conditions on the day. You step outside together, away from the usual crowds, and have a moment to take it all in.
Then you ask the question.
I'll be there to photograph the surprise, their reaction and those first moments of being engaged. Afterwards, we'll make time for portraits together, with the Icelandic landscape surrounding you.

The flight is part of the surprise. Your partner thinks they're going on an incredible Icelandic adventure, without knowing what you've planned at the landing.
A setting you can't simply drive to. We'll work with the helicopter operator to choose a suitable remote landing location, with privacy and conditions in mind.

Ice cave proposal experience
For the person who wants a proposal somewhere extraordinary, with an adventure they'll remember long after the ice has changed.

You'll climb into a Super Jeep and travel across Iceland's volcanic landscape with your private glacier guide. As far as your partner knows, you're heading out to explore somewhere incredible together.
And then you step inside the ice.
The light changes. The walls curve around you, shaped by a glacier that's constantly moving. Your partner is busy taking it all in, completely unaware that you've been planning one particular moment.
And somewhere inside that cave, you ask the question.
I'll be there to photograph the surprise, their reaction and those first moments of being engaged. Afterwards, we'll have time for photographs inside the cave and at another Icelandic location, giving you a beautiful variety of images from the experience.

Most couples travel to Iceland together, so the proposal needs to fit naturally into your trip.
We'll work out a believable reason for visiting the location, whether that's a scenic stop, a planned excursion or somewhere you've already mentioned wanting to explore.
I'll also help you figure out how we'll communicate discreetly and what your partner needs to know beforehand.
And don't worry, you won't have to suddenly develop a mysterious obsession with checking GPS coordinates. 😄

Ideally, as soon as you know your travel dates.
Several months in advance gives us more flexibility, particularly for helicopter proposals, private ice cave experiences and popular summer dates.
But shorter notice doesn't automatically mean it's too late. If you're already travelling to Iceland soon, get in touch, and I'll let you know what's possible.

Absolutely. You won't be left wondering whether you're in the right place or whether I've spotted you.
Before the proposal, we'll go through where to arrive, where I'll be positioned, when to stop and how you'll know I'm ready.
I'll also help you think through the little details, including which direction to face and how to make sure your partner can enjoy the moment without feeling directed.
The planning is detailed beforehand so the proposal itself can feel natural.

I'll monitor the forecast and relevant conditions leading up to your proposal, and we'll decide whether adjusting the timing or changing locations makes the most sense.
For experiences involving helicopters or glacier guides, safety and access decisions are made with the operators.
I can't promise Iceland will cooperate, but I can make sure we're prepared to respond when it doesn't.

During the proposal, I'll photograph the moment discreetly so your partner can react naturally.
Afterwards, we'll take things at your pace. I might suggest walking together, finding somewhere to sit for a moment or simply enjoying the view.
I'll offer guidance when you need it, but you won't spend your first moments of being engaged being told to pose constantly.
