You don't need to choose your ceremony location, book every vendor, understand Iceland's weather and buy your hiking boots in the same afternoon.
Some decisions shape everything that comes afterwards. Others make much more sense once your date, season and experience have started taking shape.
This Iceland elopement checklist organizes the planning process by time, from the decisions worth making around a year ahead to the things you'll want to double-check during your final week in Iceland.
Before you start working through the practical details, though, there's one decision I want you to make first.
Before the Checklist: Decide How You Want Your Elopement to Feel
Before choosing waterfalls, dresses or timelines, think about the experience itself.
Do you want the day to feel quiet and slow, or adventurous and full of movement?
Is privacy important enough that you'd happily wake before sunrise or travel somewhere more remote?
Do you want to spend hours hiking, or would you rather have more time for coffee, vows and nowhere else you need to be?
Will it be just the two of you, or are family and friends part of the experience?
These decisions don't give you a finished plan. They give you something more useful: a way to judge every decision that comes afterwards.
Once you know how you want the day to feel, choosing your season, locations, timeline and experiences becomes much easier.

12 Months Before Your Iceland Elopement
Decide your elopement date and what time of the year you prefer to get married. If you want to see the highlands of Iceland, they are only open from mid-June till early September. If you want to explore Iceland while it’s wintertime but having still a good amount of daylight, early March can be a good option for you.
Checking local events or holidays affecting your elopement date.
Set up your elopement budget: Researching and estimating costs for travel, accommodation, and ceremony
Check out the legal requirements to get married in Iceland; Understand Icelandic marriage laws and Gather necessary documentation
Reach out to vendors and talk about what vendors do you need: photographer, videographer, hair and makeup artist, flowers or something else.
Start to search for your wedding dress. 12 months is the earliest time to hunt for your wedding dress. It can take some time to find the perfect one, make adjustments to it. If you order online, make sure to check how long it takes for your dress to arrive and prepare to have adjustments made for the dress.
Check when your passport expires. If your U.S citizen, your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned date of departure to visit Iceland.
Decide will there be on your day just the two of you or maybe your close family members or close friends.
10 Months Before Your Iceland Elopement
Plan out your elopement day: what are the things you want to see and experience? What are the locations you want to have in your photos? What are your likes and dislikes for your day? If you can do anything you want to, what would that include?
Choose your elopement location; Explore different scenic spots in Iceland and obtain necessary permits for specific locations

Considering practical accessories (e.g., warm shawls, comfortable footwear).
3 Months Before Your Iceland Elopement
Let your credit card company know you will be travelling abroad. Sometimes credit cards freeze cards if they don’t know you are travelling abroad and you making big card payments (hotel or car rent payments).
Confirming vendor contracts and details
Making any necessary adjustments to the plan
Providing guests with travel information and accommodation details

1 Month Before Your Iceland Elopement
Depending on the time the wedding dress will be delivered, remember to have a dress rehearsal: how to put it on, how to move around with it, how to pick and carry the lace around.
Creating a checklist of items to bring, including any necessary documents.
Confirming the day-of timeline
Assembling a wedding day emergency kit with essentials.
1 Week Before Your Iceland Elopement
Do last-minute beauty preparation: hair, nails, lashes.

By the final week, the big decisions should already be behind you.
Your locations have been chosen. Your vendors are booked. Your ceremony and travel plans are taking shape.
Now isn't the time to redesign your entire elopement.
It's the time to make sure the practical pieces are in place, check the things Iceland can still change, and leave enough flexibility for the day to unfold naturally.
Use this final checklist before your Iceland elopement:

☐ Confirm the final meeting times and locations with your photographer and vendors.
☐ Save your timeline somewhere you can access offline.
☐ Double-check driving times between locations rather than relying on distance alone.
☐ Make sure everyone involved knows where they need to be and when.
☐ Confirm any reservations, private guides, activities or transportation.
Weather & road conditions
☐ Check the latest weather forecast — but don't obsess over it a week in advance.
☐ Check road conditions for every part of your planned route.
☐ Confirm that any Highlands, F-road or remote access you are relying on is still realistic.
☐ Make sure you know what Plan B looks like if weather or road conditions change.
☐ Keep some flexibility around the exact timing of outdoor moments where possible.
Iceland doesn't always reward the most rigid plan. Sometimes moving something by an hour can make a surprisingly big difference.
What you're wearing
☐ Try on your complete outfit one final time.
☐ Break in your hiking boots or ceremony shoes before arriving in Iceland.
☐ Pack warm base layers that can disappear underneath your clothing.
☐ Bring waterproof outer layers for both of you.
☐ Pack gloves, warm socks and anything else you'll need to stay comfortable between locations.
☐ Bring a separate bag for shoes, layers and anything you may want to take on and off throughout the day.
Looking incredible is much easier when you're not secretly freezing.
Ceremony essentials
☐ Pack your vows somewhere safe.
☐ Bring your rings.
☐ Check that any required legal documents are with you.
☐ Confirm your officiant or celebrant details.
☐ Pack any small ceremony items you want to include.
☐ If you're exchanging personal letters or gifts, put them somewhere you won't accidentally leave at the hotel.
The little things that make a big difference
☐ Bring water and easy-to-eat snacks.
☐ Charge your phones and power banks.
☐ Download offline maps where needed.
☐ Bring any medication or personal essentials you'll need during the day.
☐ Pack tissues. Icelandic wind and emotional vows are quite the combination.
☐ Leave a little extra room in the car rather than packing everything completely full.
And finally: stop planning
At some point, the checklist needs to end.
You've made the decisions. You've prepared for Iceland's weather. You've packed the layers, checked the roads and worked through the logistics.
Now your job changes.
You get to experience it.
Your elopement doesn't need to follow the plan perfectly to be meaningful. Iceland might move things around a little. The weather might change. You might spend longer somewhere because neither of you is ready to leave yet.
That's not the plan going wrong.
That's the reason we leave space in it in the first place.
Once the practical pieces are taken care of, you can stop thinking about what comes next and be present for what's actually happening.
And that's a much better place to end an Iceland elopement checklist than with one more thing to do.
