Wedding Dress Inspiration for an Iceland Elopement: What to Wear

Choosing your wedding dress for an Iceland elopement comes with a few questions you probably wouldn't have if you were getting married indoors.

Can you walk across black sand in it? Will you be warm enough? What happens if the hem gets wet? And if you're planning to hike, do you need to carry your dress in a backpack?

The good news is that you don't have to give up the dress you love just because you're getting married somewhere adventurous.

I've photographed couples in Iceland wearing everything from flowing wedding gowns and colourful dresses to suits, jumpsuits and practical hiking boots hidden beneath layers of fabric.

Some have walked straight from their accommodation to their ceremony. Others have changed into their wedding clothes after hiking into the mountains.

Both can work beautifully.

So rather than telling you which wedding dress looks best against a waterfall, let's talk about choosing an outfit that feels like you and works for the experience you're planning.

Choosing a Wedding Dress for Your Iceland Elopement

The first thing I'd ask isn't whether you prefer lace, satin or tulle.

It's what you imagine doing on your wedding day.

Are you exchanging vows somewhere that's only a short walk from the car? Hiking into the mountains? Visiting a glacier with a professional guide? Or spending the day exploring several locations, with time for a lovely dinner afterwards?

Your plans will influence which dress details matter most.

A long train might be perfectly manageable for a short ceremony at an accessible location. For a muddy mountain hike, it could become something you need to carry or change into later.

Neither option is wrong.

Choose Something You Can Move In

When trying on wedding dresses, don't just stand in front of the mirror.

Walk around. Sit down. Take a big step. Lift your arms. Try bending your knees.

If you're planning a hiking elopement, think about whether you can step over uneven ground or climb a small slope comfortably.

You don't necessarily need a lightweight dress. You need to understand what wearing your chosen dress will involve.

Think About the Fabric

Different fabrics behave differently outdoors.

Chiffon and some lighter fabrics can move beautifully, but they may blow around considerably in Iceland's wind.

Satin can look elegant, but certain finishes show water marks and creases more easily.

Lace, embroidery and layered skirts can be wonderful choices, although they may catch on vegetation or become heavier when wet.

There's no single perfect fabric for Iceland.

I'd recommend discussing the material with your bridal boutique or dressmaker and thinking about how you'll actually spend the day.

Be Realistic About the Hem

Here's something worth accepting before your wedding day: if you're wearing a long dress outdoors in Iceland, the hem may get dirty.

Black sand, wet grass, mud and volcanic ground are part of the landscape.

That doesn't mean you need to choose a short dress or avoid beautiful locations. But if keeping your dress completely pristine is important to you, we'll need to plan around that.

A bustle, removable train or second outfit can also make a difference.

Do You Have to Wear a White Wedding Dress?

Absolutely not.

One of the things I love about elopements is that couples can choose clothing without worrying so much about what a traditional wedding is supposed to look like.

You can wear ivory, black, red, blue, champagne, floral embroidery or something entirely different.

If you've always imagined yourself in a classic white wedding gown, wear it.

If you've never felt like yourself in white, there's no reason to force it.

Colourful Wedding Dresses in Iceland

Colour can look beautiful against Iceland's landscapes, but I wouldn't choose your dress colour purely because it contrasts with black sand or green mountains.

Choose a colour you actually love.

A dramatic black gown might feel completely natural for one person. Someone else might be happiest in a soft pastel dress or a traditional white silhouette with colourful details.

The outfit should feel like yours before we ever decide where to photograph it.

Which Wedding Dress Silhouette Works Best for an Iceland Elopement?

You can wear almost any wedding dress silhouette in Iceland. The important question is how it works with your plans.

A-Line Wedding Dresses

An A-line dress can offer a comfortable balance between a fitted bodice and a skirt with room to move.

Depending on the fabric and length, it can work well for couples planning to explore several locations.

If you want a longer skirt, ask whether it can be lifted or bustled easily.

Ballgowns and Full Skirts

Yes, you can absolutely wear a ballgown for an adventure elopement.

You might just need to plan a little differently.

A full skirt can be more difficult to manage in strong wind, inside vehicles or along narrow trails. It may also take up more space if you're changing clothes outdoors.

For a ceremony with relatively easy access, none of that necessarily needs to be a problem.

Fitted and Mermaid Wedding Dresses

A fitted gown can be a beautiful choice, but some designs restrict your stride.

If you're considering one, test how comfortably you can walk uphill, step over uneven ground and sit down.

For a longer hike, changing into your dress at the ceremony location may be the better option.

Sheath and Minimalist Wedding Dresses

A simple silhouette can be easier to pack and manage, although that depends on the fabric and fit.

Minimalist doesn't automatically mean practical. A narrow skirt, delicate fabric or a long train can still affect movement.

Choose the shape you love, then work out the logistics around it.

What to Wear Under Your Wedding Dress in Iceland

This is the part that doesn't always make it onto wedding inspiration boards, but it can make a big difference to your comfort.

Thermal Layers

For colder conditions, consider discreet thermal layers beneath your wedding outfit.

Depending on your dress, that might mean thermal leggings, warm tights or a fitted base layer that doesn't show through the fabric.

Not every outfit will accommodate these comfortably, so try them together before travelling.

Wedding Shoes Versus Hiking Boots

You don't need to spend your entire Iceland elopement day in delicate wedding shoes.

Many couples choose sturdy boots for travelling between locations and change into other shoes for their ceremony or dinner.

If you're walking on uneven, wet or icy terrain, footwear needs to suit the conditions.

And if you love the look of hiking boots with your wedding dress, there's absolutely no rule saying you need to hide them.

Coats, Capes and Warm Accessories

A beautiful coat, wool layer, shawl or cape can become part of your wedding outfit rather than something you reluctantly put on between photographs.

For a winter elopement, warmth needs to be planned properly.

A delicate bridal cape might look lovely, but it isn't necessarily a substitute for an insulated jacket in freezing wind.

You can have both.

Can You Hike in Your Wedding Dress in Iceland?

Yes, but whether I'd recommend it depends on the dress, the route and the weather.

For a short, straightforward walk, you may be perfectly comfortable wearing your wedding outfit from the beginning.

For a longer hike, I'd usually discuss carrying the dress and changing at a suitable location.

That gives you more freedom to move and reduces the chance of damaging your outfit before the ceremony.

Changing Into Your Dress After a Hike

If we're planning a hiking elopement, we'll consider where you could change comfortably and privately.

That might mean a suitable sheltered location or another arrangement built into the day.

Not every hiking destination has somewhere appropriate to change, so it's something to decide before committing to the route.

If your elopement includes a proper hike, there's another side to choosing your outfit: how it works on uneven ground, in the wind and when you're wearing warm layers underneath. I've written a separate guide to choosing a hiking wedding dress for your Iceland elopement, including what to consider before buying.

Glacier and Ice Cave Elopements

If you're planning a glacier or ice cave experience, your clothing needs to work with the guide's safety equipment.

Helmets, harnesses, crampons and other required gear take priority.

Long skirts, trains and loose fabric may need to be secured or changed for technical activities, and some outfits may not be suitable for the guided route.

I've photographed Caroline and Daniel's ice cave and ice-climbing elopement, where the adventure was a meaningful part of their wedding experience.

The lesson isn't that you need a particular style of wedding dress to be adventurous.

It's that we can plan when and where to wear it so you're comfortable and safe.

Iceland Elopement Outfit Ideas Beyond Wedding Dresses

You don't have to wear a dress at all.

Some couples prefer suits, jumpsuits, tailored separates or a combination of outfits throughout the day.

Wedding Suits

A well-fitted suit can work beautifully for an Iceland elopement.

Think about the fabric, warmth, movement and whether you'll need additional layers.

A tailored jacket might look wonderful during the ceremony, while a warmer coat makes more sense during a windy walk afterwards.

Bridal Jumpsuits and Separates

Jumpsuits and separates can be a great option if you want something a little different.

Just remember to test how easily you can move, add layers and use the bathroom, especially if you'll be spending time in remote areas.

Two Wedding Outfits

You can also choose two looks.

Perhaps you want something practical for hiking and a dramatic gown for your vows. Or a formal outfit for the ceremony and something comfortable for celebrating afterwards.

There's no requirement to wear the same clothes from breakfast until the end of the day.

How to Pack and Travel With Your Wedding Dress to Iceland

If you're travelling internationally, a little preparation can save you unnecessary stress.

Check Your Airline's Wedding Dress Policy

Don't assume your airline will have a dedicated wardrobe or allow an oversized garment bag as additional cabin baggage.

Contact the airline before travelling to confirm the permitted dimensions and options.

If your dress is especially delicate, ask the bridal boutique or designer how they recommend packing it.

Pack According to the Fabric

Some dresses can be folded carefully in a suitable garment bag. Others require more protection.

Follow the dressmaker's advice, particularly for structured bodices, delicate embroidery or fabrics that crease easily.

Plan for Wrinkles

Hang your dress carefully when you arrive and allow time for it to settle.

If it needs steaming, check the care label first. Not every fabric or embellishment is suitable for direct steam.

Don't leave this until the morning of your elopement.

Bring a Small Wedding Outfit Emergency Kit

A few practical items can help:

  • Fashion tape and safety pins

  • A small sewing kit

  • Blister plasters

  • Spare tights or socks

  • A cloth for drying shoes

  • A suitable bag for muddy boots or wet layers

You probably won't need everything, but it's much nicer to have it available than to start searching for supplies in a small Icelandic village on your wedding morning.

What About Iceland's Weather?

Iceland doesn't require you to dress like you're going on an Arctic expedition every day.

But it does require realistic planning.

Summer can bring cold wind and rain. Winter adds limited daylight, snow, ice and potentially severe conditions.

The right outfit depends on the season, location and amount of time you'll spend outdoors.

I wouldn't recommend choosing your wedding dress solely based on the average temperature for the month you're visiting.

We need to think about the actual experience.

If you're planning a ceremony at a location close to your accommodation, staying warm may be relatively straightforward.

If you're hiking into the Highlands or exploring a glacier, we'll need a more detailed clothing and equipment plan.

And sometimes the best decision is simply to put on your warm jacket between meaningful moments rather than spend your wedding day freezing for photographs.

My Advice for Choosing Your Iceland Elopement Wedding Dress

Choose the outfit that makes you excited to get married.

Not the one you think Iceland requires.

If you love a dramatic gown, we can explore how to make that work. If you'd rather wear a suit and hiking boots, wonderful. If you're dreaming of a colourful dress or two different outfits, that's an option too.

What matters is understanding your plans before deciding which practical details need attention.

That's part of how I approach elopement planning.

We'll talk about the experience you want, how much walking you're comfortable with, what the season allows and which moments matter most to you.

Then we can make decisions about locations, timing and logistics without asking you to sacrifice everything you love about your wedding outfit.

If you're still planning the bigger picture, you can explore my Iceland elopement packages and planning experiences.

And if you've already found your dream dress and you're wondering how on earth you're going to hike in it, don't worry. That's exactly the kind of thing we can figure out together.
