Midnight Sun Elopement in Iceland
After hours
What if your wedding day began when everyone else's was winding down?
You don't have to wake up at 3 am to experience a quieter side of Iceland.
During the longest days of summer, there's another option: Sleep in. Have breakfast together. Take your time getting ready. Eat before you're starving.
And then, while tour buses begin heading back to Reykjavík and other travellers start thinking about dinner, we head out.
After Hours is a way of designing your Iceland elopement around the long summer evenings: softer light, a slower beginning, fewer reasons to rush and the strange magic of exploring a country that never quite seems to go to sleep.
Maybe you exchange vows beside a waterfall late in the evening.
Maybe we're walking across black sand close to midnight.
Maybe we're drinking coffee at 1 am, laughing about the fact that you're still wearing wedding clothes and somehow the sky is still bright.
There isn't a fixed After Hours itinerary.
There is simply one question behind it:
What if we let Iceland's summer light decide the rhythm of your day?
What Does an After-Hours Elopement Actually Feel Like?
It feels like having a wedding morning without immediately needing to get somewhere.
You wake up when you're ready. Have coffee. Eat breakfast. Maybe go for a walk. Maybe do absolutely nothing for a while.
There isn't a photographer knocking on your door before sunrise because somebody decided that's what an Iceland elopement is supposed to look like.
Getting ready can happen later. You can take your time.
And depending on how we've designed the day, we might even have a proper meal before the main adventure begins.
Then Iceland starts changing. Cars disappear from car parks. Day tours move on.
Some of the places that felt busy a few hours earlier begin to breathe again.
And we're only getting started.
You Don't Have to Get Married at Sunrise to Find Privacy
Early mornings can be wonderful. I've planned them. I've photographed them. And sometimes they genuinely are the best answer.
But they're not automatically the right answer for every couple.
If waking up at 3 am means you'll spend your elopement day exhausted, I'm not going to recommend it simply because photographers love sunrise.
During Iceland's summer, we have something unusual to work with:
Time.
The evenings stretch. The light lingers.
And during the weeks surrounding the summer solstice, true darkness barely arrives at all.
That gives us another way to think about privacy.
Instead of trying to beat everyone to Iceland...
sometimes we can simply outlast them.
When Everyone Else Does A Check-in to Accommodation, We Keep Going
This is where After Hours becomes fun.
Imagine arriving somewhere you've been looking forward to seeing and noticing that the day is beginning to change.
There may still be people around. Then gradually, fewer. And fewer. We're not standing beside the car waiting impatiently for the last tourist to leave.
We're experiencing the place. Walking. Talking. Exploring. Letting the evening unfold.
And because we've deliberately given ourselves time, we don't need every location to become empty on command.
If somewhere needs another twenty minutes, we have twenty minutes.
Maybe that's when we make coffee. Maybe you wander somewhere else. Maybe we discover that the unexpected thing happening beside us is actually better than whatever we'd planned next.
Privacy becomes part of the rhythm rather than something we're constantly chasing.
What Could Your After-Hours Elopement Look Like?
There isn't one itinerary, but imagine this:
A slow morning together. Breakfast without watching the clock. Maybe a walk, a hot spring, coffee somewhere you love, or simply enjoying your accommodation.
Then you begin getting ready. Music playing. A drink. No rush. Maybe you have an early dinner together, or we pack something really good for later.
Then we leave.
One landscape. Another when the evening gets quieter. Time to wander rather than immediately photograph.
Eventually, somewhere that feels right, you exchange your vows.
And afterwards? We stay. Maybe you sit down. Maybe you open something to drink. Maybe you call your family. Maybe you don't tell anybody anything until tomorrow.
Then we keep exploring while the light hangs around far longer than your brain thinks it should.
And eventually, at some ridiculous hour, we head home. Tired. Probably hungry again.
Married.
And wondering whether 1 am coffee on your elopement day should become an annual tradition.
The Midnight Sun Isn't Really About Midnight
This is important.
After Hours isn't about engineering one perfect photograph at exactly 12:00 am.
And Iceland's midnight sun doesn't mean you'll necessarily see a glowing orange sun sitting perfectly on the horizon at midnight.
Weather, clouds, mountains, geography and the time of summer all influence what the light actually does.
What makes this season special is the amount of usable daylight we have to work with.
It gives us flexibility.
We can stay somewhere longer. Change direction. Wait. Adapt to weather. Follow better conditions.
Or decide that you're having too good a time where you already are, and there is absolutely no reason to leave.
The long light gives your day room to move.
And Yes, Iceland Might Still Be Iceland
You could plan your entire elopement around beautiful summer evening light, and Iceland could give us fog. Or rain. Or wind. Or clouds. Or some strange combination of all four within twenty minutes.
After Hours isn't a promise of golden light.
It's a way of using Iceland's long summer daylight to give us more flexibility when conditions change.
Sometimes the moody evening becomes better than what we'd imagined.
Sometimes we adjust the order.
Sometimes we wait.
Sometimes we drive somewhere else.
The plan exists.
It just doesn't need to control every minute.
Popular Places Can Feel Completely Different Later
After Hours isn't necessarily about taking you somewhere nobody knows.
Some couples genuinely love Iceland's iconic landscapes.
And I don't think you should remove somewhere meaningful from your wedding simply because it's popular.
Instead, we can ask:
When does this place feel most like the experience you want?
Visitor patterns vary enormously by location, season and even the type of tours operating nearby.
Some places remain busy late. Others become noticeably quieter. Some aren't worth building your ceremony around if privacy is important.
And sometimes the answer isn't waiting for a famous location at all.
That's where knowing the difference matters.
The goal isn't to collect photographs of Iceland without tourists in them.
It's to give you enough room to stop noticing everyone else.
After Hours Can Take Us Somewhere Quieter Too
Of course, we don't have to spend the evening waiting for popular locations to empty.
Long summer daylight also gives us time to go farther.
Depending on the experience we're designing, that might mean leaving the busiest parts of the South Coast.
Heading toward a quieter valley. Walking somewhere that requires a little effort. Or, when seasonal road conditions allow, taking the right vehicle into the Icelandic Highlands.
That's where After Hours and a privacy-first experience can overlap beautifully.
These aren't packages you have to combine.
They're simply different ideas I can use when designing your day. Maybe the thing you want most is late summer light. Maybe it's privacy.
Maybe it's both.
We'll build from there.
Is After Hours Right for Us?
After Hours might be right for you if the idea of a 3 am alarm makes you want to cancel your own elopement.
You are visiting Iceland during summertime
You want slower mornings
Your care about privacy
Simply love the idea of your elopement day feeling a little removed from normal life.
After Hours isn't about staying out as late as possible. It's about designing around the part of the Icelandic summer that gives your day the best experience.
You don't have to stay out until 2 am.
How do we book After Hours?
After Hours isn't another elopement package.
It's one of the ways I can design your day.
Depending on how far we want to travel, what you'd like to experience and how much room we want to leave for the evening to unfold, After Hours could be created within one of my existing McWhirter Elopement Experiences.
A beautifully simple late-evening experience near Vík may fit within Just Us.
A longer South Iceland adventure might suit Fire & Ice.
If we want more freedom, private transportation or the ability to travel farther, The Wild Story may give us the space we need.
And if we're designing something completely bespoke across Iceland, that's where Northern Passage comes in.
You don't need to know which one you need.
Tell me what sounds like you. I'll help with the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
After Hours is designed around Iceland's long summer daylight, so it works best during the part of the year when evenings remain exceptionally bright. The exact experience changes depending on your date, and I'll design the timing around the daylight available during your trip rather than promising the same midnight-light conditions throughout the entire summer.
-
No. Midnight isn't the goal. Your ceremony might happen considerably earlier. The idea is to use Iceland's long evenings to create a slower rhythm and potentially experience locations later than most visitors.
-
I never promise an empty Iceland. Visitor patterns vary by location and season. Instead, I'll use timing, location knowledge and the structure of your day to give us the best realistic opportunity for privacy.
-
Absolutely not. After Hours is about designing around long summer evenings, not testing how long you can stay awake in wedding clothes.
-
You don't need to combine or purchase anything. Both are simply ways I can think about designing your experience. If you want privacy and love the idea of late summer light, I'll use both when creating your day
-
No. After Hours is one way your elopement can be designed. I'll recommend the McWhirter Elopement Experience that gives us the right amount of time, access and flexibility once I understand what you'd like the day to include.
This Is Where Your Story Begins
Most couples don't arrive here with a complete plan. They haven't chosen every location. They don't know which season feels right. They aren't sure how many hours they'll need.
What they do know is how they want their day to feel.
Maybe you've realised a traditional wedding doesn't quite fit. Maybe you've spent evenings scrolling through Iceland photos, trying to picture yourselves there. Maybe you simply know you want a day that feels more intentional.
More meaningful. More like you.
If that's where you are, you're exactly where many of my couples begin. And that's more than enough.
From here, we'll begin discovering what your experience could become.
We'll talk about your ideas. Your priorities. The way you naturally spend time together. The landscapes that feel like you. And all the little details that turn an idea into an experience.
I'll guide you through Iceland. You simply get to focus on each other.
Here's What Happens Next
1.) Tell me about yourselves. These questions aren't about getting the "right" answers. They're simply the first step in helping me understand who you are and the kind of experience you're dreaming about
2.) P.S. If you don't hear back within 48 hours, have a quick peek in your spam folder. Patrick the Puffin takes full responsibility. He's wonderful with moral support. Less so with email administration.
3.) I'll Reach Out Personally. I'll read through everything you've shared, reply personally, and start thinking about the kind of experience that might suit you best.
4.) We'll Explore What's Possible. There's no pressure to have everything figured out. Most couples don't. This is simply a chance to explore ideas, ask questions, and leave with more clarity than you had before. That's all.
You don't need a detailed itinerary. You don't need to know exactly what you want.
You simply need a feeling that Iceland might be the place to begin your next chapter <3
