Is It Safe to Walk on a Frozen Glacier Lagoon?
You should never assume that a frozen-looking lagoon is safe to walk on.
For these elopements, access is only considered with an experienced professional glacier guide who understands the environment and can assess current conditions.
The ice is evaluated before we enter it. Appropriate safety equipment is used. And the final decision about whether we go onto the lagoon is based on the conditions that actually exist that day.
If the guide says we don't go, we don't go.
Simple as that.
This is not a location I recommend attempting to access independently, even if the surface appears completely frozen.
Adventure and safety aren't opposites. The planning, professional guidance and decisions happening quietly behind the scenes are precisely what allow you to relax once we're there.

The first thing you notice is how quiet it is. Winter has a way of changing sound in Iceland.
And when you're standing on a frozen lagoon surrounded by ice, the landscape feels even bigger because of it. You start walking, carefully at first. Your crampons meet the ice beneath your feet. Icebergs rise around you in shapes that have been slowly created by the glacier, weather and water.
And somewhere during that walk, you realise just how unusual the place you're standing in actually is.
