Not every surprise proposal in Iceland needs a helicopter, an ice cave or a full day of travelling.
Sometimes, a beautiful waterfall just outside Reykjavík is exactly the right place.
For Tyler and Madison, that place was Þórufoss, a waterfall tucked into the countryside around 45 minutes from Iceland's capital. It's a lovely option for couples who want to experience something beyond the city without spending hours travelling across Iceland.
And for a surprise proposal, that balance can make planning considerably easier.
Tyler & Madison's Waterfall Proposal Near Reykjavík
Tyler chose Þórufoss waterfall as the setting for his proposal to Madison.
Rather than proposing in the centre of Reykjavík, he wanted to share the moment somewhere surrounded by Iceland's natural landscape.
Þórufoss sits in the Kjós area, within driving distance of the capital. The waterfall drops into a rocky valley, with open views across the surrounding countryside.
It's the kind of place where you can step away from the city and enjoy a very different side of Iceland without committing to an entire day on the road.
For couples visiting Reykjavík, that's part of its appeal.
And for Tyler and Madison, it became the place where their next chapter began.
Why Þórufoss Is a Beautiful Place to Propose Near Reykjavík
One of the things I like about Þórufoss is that the waterfall doesn't require an especially complicated journey from Reykjavík. You can reach the area by car, and there are viewpoints within a relatively short walk of the parking area.
That makes it worth considering for couples who want a waterfall proposal without travelling all the way to Iceland's South Coast.
But there's another reason I'd consider it.
Unlike some of Iceland's most famous waterfalls, Þórufoss isn't necessarily the first place visitors think of when planning their trip. That doesn't mean you'll have it completely to yourselves, but it can offer a different atmosphere from the country's busiest attractions.
A Waterfall Proposal Without a Full-Day Road Trip
Þórufoss is approximately 40–50 minutes from Reykjavík in suitable driving conditions. For someone planning a surprise, this can be useful.
A countryside drive or short sightseeing outing can provide a natural reason to leave the city together.
You don't necessarily need an elaborate itinerary to make the proposal special. Sometimes the most important thing is choosing the right location and making sure the experience feels comfortable for both of you.
Planning a Surprise Proposal at Þórufoss Waterfall
A waterfall might look straightforward in photographs, but there are still a few things I'd think about before recommending it for a proposal.
Choosing the Right Place for the Proposal
The most dramatic viewpoint isn't always the best place to get down on one knee. I'd consider the ground conditions, safe access, how much space the couple has and whether the location feels comfortable for the moment.
You don't need to stand right beside the water or approach an exposed edge to have a beautiful proposal. In fact, sometimes stepping back gives you a better view of the landscape and a more relaxed experience.
Privacy and Timing
Þórufoss can be quieter than some of Iceland's major sightseeing locations, but it's still a public place. Other visitors may arrive, and complete privacy can't be guaranteed.
If privacy is important, I'd consider the season, time of day and likely visitor activity when deciding how to approach the proposal. The goal isn't simply to find a beautiful background. It's to give you both enough space to enjoy what's happening.
Preparing for Iceland's Weather
Weather is always part of planning an outdoor proposal in Iceland.
Wind, rain, snow and icy conditions can affect access, visibility and how comfortable it is to spend time outside.
I'd always recommend checking the current weather and road conditions before travelling. And if the conditions aren't suitable, it's better to have another plan than to force a proposal at a location that no longer feels safe or enjoyable.
What Makes a Waterfall Proposal Feel Personal?
It's easy to spend hours researching the most beautiful places to propose in Iceland.
But I don't think the most photographed location is automatically the right choice.
Some people would love a dramatic waterfall and a little adventure. Others would rather have a quiet moment, followed by a lovely dinner back in Reykjavík. Some want the proposal to be a complete surprise. Others might suspect something is happening but still want the experience to feel natural.
Those details matter more than choosing the biggest waterfall.
When I'm helping someone plan a proposal, I want to understand their partner first.
Would they enjoy being photographed? Are they comfortable with other people nearby? Would they prefer a short walk or something more adventurous?
The answers help us choose an experience that feels right for them.
And that is just as important as the location itself.
Is Þórufoss Worth Visiting for a Proposal From Reykjavík?
If you're staying in Reykjavík and want to propose somewhere surrounded by Icelandic scenery, Þórufoss is certainly worth considering.
Here's what I'd keep in mind:
Location: Kjós area, roughly 40–50 minutes from Reykjavík under suitable road conditions.
Access: A relatively short walk to viewpoints, depending on where you choose to stand.
Privacy: Potentially quieter than Iceland's major tourist waterfalls, but never guaranteed empty.
Weather: Wind, rain, snow and ice can change the experience considerably.
Best for: Couples who enjoy natural landscapes and want a waterfall proposal within reasonable driving distance of the capital.
I wouldn't choose it simply because it's convenient.
I'd choose it because the landscape, amount of travel and kind of experience suit the person you're proposing to.
If you're still comparing locations, I've also written a guide to the best places to propose in Iceland, including waterfalls, black sand beaches and more adventurous possibilities.
