A Surprise Proposal at Svöðufoss Waterfall in Iceland | Luke & Euphrasia

Luke had a plan to propose to Euphrasia on Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula, by Svödufoss waterfall.

When I'm planning a surprise proposal in Iceland, choosing the location is only part of the work. The other part is making sure the plan still makes sense when the day arrives.

For Luke and Euphrasia, I was checking the rain radar and following how the showers were moving across the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. We changed the original timing a couple of times to not end up under the heaviest rainfall.

It's one of those planning decisions that might sound quite small afterwards, but it can make a real difference when you're the person about to get down on one knee.

Luke already had enough to think about without having to work out Iceland's weather forecast, too. And our change of plans paid off. When it was time for the proposal, the rain held off.

A Surprise Proposal at Svöðufoss Waterfall

My part of the surprise was to be there without Euphrasia knowing. I stayed hidden as the photographer, ready for the moment Luke proposed.

That's something we plan carefully beforehand. The person proposing needs to know where to go and what to expect, while their partner shouldn't have to wonder why someone with a camera is suddenly paying so much attention to them.

At Svöðufoss, Luke was able to ask Euphrasia to marry him without the rain we'd been working around. And I could photograph the proposal without stepping into the moment itself.

The timing had changed. But the important part of Luke's plan was still exactly where it needed to be.

Engagement Photographs at Kirkjufell

After the proposal, we headed to Kirkjufell for Luke and Euphrasia's engagement photographs.

I like keeping the proposal itself separate from the photographs we take afterwards. Before the question, one person is carrying a rather big secret. There's a location to reach, a surprise to protect, and probably quite a few thoughts going through their head.

Afterwards, that part is over. We can take our time with photographs, explore a little and let the couple enjoy being newly engaged.

For Luke and Euphrasia, Svöðufoss was where the proposal happened, while Kirkjufell became part of their just-engaged experience.

What Luke & Euphrasia's Proposal Shows About Planning in Iceland

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when planning a surprise proposal in Iceland is becoming too attached to one exact location or time.

A beautiful spot isn't much use if the weather makes the experience uncomfortable or the surprise difficult to manage. That doesn't mean changing plans every time a little rain appears in the forecast. It means understanding the conditions, knowing what alternatives are available, and making decisions based on the experience you want.

We didn't need to change the whole idea behind the proposal. We just needed a better plan for the conditions we had.

Planning Your Own Surprise Proposal in Iceland?

Hi, I’m Lisa. Proposal designer and photographer.

If you're thinking about proposing in Iceland, you don't need to arrive with the perfect location already chosen.

We'll start with your partner, what they would enjoy, how private you'd like the moment to feel, and whether you'd prefer a simple surprise or something more adventurous.

From there, I'll help you work out the location, timing, surprise logistics and weather alternatives.

And when the moment comes, I'll be ready to photograph it without taking you out of the experience.

You can explore my Iceland proposal experiences to see how we can plan something that feels right for the two of you.
